FROM MATERNITY TO MOTHERHOOD: A FOURTH TRIMESTER PORTRAIT STORY IN NEW YORK CITY
Why the days after birth may be the most meaningful time to document your story.
She almost didn’t schedule a maternity session but from our very first consultation call, we knew our connection was one that needed to happen. The day was light and fun.
There was laughter before the camera even came out.
She had that unmistakable glow many mothers carry in the final weeks of pregnancy — excitement mixed with a quiet curiosity about the little person she was about to meet. Her husband was loving and hilarious.
We designed a luxurious maternity photography experience for her to feel joyful and editorial: flowing fabrics, sharp studio lighting, and couture pieces that celebrated the beauty of anticipation and their backgrounds.
At that stage, motherhood still lived in the future.
You can feel it in maternity portraits — the dreaming stage.
But the most extraordinary part of her story hadn’t happened yet.
Once we learned that her little one had arrived a few weeks later, we couldn’t wait to welcome them both back into the studio for her First Breath session.
She arrived with her daughter, and something about the energy in the room just lit up. It was the most magical day.
A beautiful Mom.
A perfect Baby.
And the day was giving us this pretty light that made the studio glow.
If maternity photography captures the promise of Motherhood, the fourth trimester reveals the TRUTH of it.
The Fourth Trimester is the chapter right after birth and it’s an enormous transition for both Mother and Baby and those days and fly by in a blur.
While pregnancy receives so much attention and preparation, oftentimes the fourth trimester is when families realize how quickly everything changes.
Newborn features evolve and you fall in love with that baby scrunch in between bottle washing.
Tiny fingers uncurl.
Sleep cuddles slowly become curious eyes.
For many Mothers, this period is also deeply emotional-WHO AM I? A blend of exhaustion, love, healing, and constant discovery and many will look back on that stage lovingly but not quite remembering anything about except how in love they became.
And yet, it’s one of the most overlooked seasons to photograph.
What I loved is that Candace knew she would want to honor this chapter of Motherhood for herself and her little one and I’m so happy we were able to create this session for her. Expecting families searching for maternity photography in New York City or newborn portraits with mom often discover that documenting both pregnancy and the fourth trimester creates the most meaningful visual story.
Many families book their newborn photography to capture their perfect babies.
But something remarkable happens when the mother steps into the frame too.
As she is.
The images then become about connection.
Years from now, children won’t only want to see what they looked like as babies.
They’ll look for YOU.
How they were held.
How you looked at them.
A glimpse into what their infant selves felt in your arms.
Those details, the softness of a cheek against a shoulder, the quiet smiles and giggles, are the emotional architecture of a family history and it’s important.
For Candace’s Mommy and Me session, we designed the environment to mirror the intimacy of those early days and their natural connection. Everything was light and intentional- warm, diffused light, rich textures and tones that naturally invited closeness without fuss, neutral tones that kept the focus on them and their bond, and gentle posing that allowed a healing body and baby bright eyes to come into their own.
Nothing rushed.
No pressure.
Just space for Mommy and Baby to BE.
And all the happy moments in between is magic I am there to capture.
I will treasure this day, and these images forever. Thank you so much for capturing these precious moments.

One of the most common things mothers say during sessions is this:
“I wish I could freeze time.”
The truth is that photography is the closest thing we have to doing exactly that.
The newborn phase may only last a few weeks.
But the memory of how it felt to hold your baby in those first days deserves to live far longer.
A Thought for Mothers Reading This
If you’re currently expecting, or holding your newborn as you read this, there is something worth remembering: Your baby will never again be this small.
These early days may feel like a blur now.
But one day, they will become the moments you wish you could revisit.
And sometimes, the most meaningful photographs are the ones you almost didn’t take.
For mothers in New York City, Brooklyn, and the Tri-State area, consultations for maternity and newborn sessions are available year-round.
Because the first chapter of motherhood deserves to be remembered with intention.
