When Should You Book Your Maternity Session in NYC? (Timing Matters More Than You Think)

As a New York City maternity photographer, one question I get asked to most is, When should I book my maternity photos?” And truly, timing is one of the most important decisions you’ll make — and it impacts everything from your wardrobe selections to final artwork delivery.

Let’s see why!

The Best Time to Take Maternity Photos

The ideal time to photograph maternity portraits is between 29–35 weeks.

During this window:

  • Your bump has fully rounded out and pronounced

  • Most Moms still feel comfortable moving and posing at this stage

  • Swelling and end-of-pregnancy fatigue are typically more manageable

While this is the best time to photograph, it is not the best time to book.

When to Book Your Maternity Photographer in NYC

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, ideally between 16–22 weeks.

Here’s why:

1. Luxury Wardrobe & Custom Styling Takes Time

As a full-service maternity studio in NYC, wardrobe, professional hair + makeup, and custom set design are included in your experience.

Many specialty gowns and custom pieces require advance ordering — sometimes up to four weeks. Booking early ensures we have time to curate the right pieces for you.

2. Studio Calendars Fill Quickly

Unlike high-volume studios, we intentionally limit the number of maternity sessions we accept each month to preserve a personalized experience.

For our New York maternity photography clients, this means:

  • Dedicated styling time

  • Thoughtful set design

  • A relaxed, unhurried session

Booking 4–8 weeks in advance ensures your preferred date is available.

3. Editing & Heirloom Artwork Production

After your session, your images undergo professional retouching and refinement. This process typically takes 2–3 weeks.

If you plan to use your maternity photos for:

  • A baby shower

  • A birth announcement

  • Framed gifts for family

  • Custom albums

You’ll want to factor in additional production time for prints and heirloom artwork.

Waiting until the last minute often means receiving your images after baby has already arrived — and we don’t want that.

4. Peace of Mind During Your Final Weeks

The final stretch of pregnancy can be unpredictable. Scheduling your maternity session early removes unnecessary stress.

Instead of scrambling for dates or rushing decisions, you simply arrive and enjoy a fully styled experience designed around you.

Whether you’re searching for a luxury maternity photography studio in NYC or elsewhere,, early planning ensures:

  • The best wardrobe selection

  • Your preferred session date

  • Timely image delivery

  • A seamless, elevated experience

We currently accept a limited number of maternity sessions each month to maintain the highest level of service.
